Variation on Pull-Through Crown

We came up with this after first creating our Pull-Through Crown.  Directions for that can be found on our post from last Monday which is here
We decided to take that hair that was hanging down and twist it up to create a more formal updo.
Starting on the left side, we divided the hanging hair into small sections and made twists out of them.  Each twist was draped below our crown and the end was secured up and over it with a bobby pin just behind the original crown.
We did this several times creating several draped twsits.
This was done on the right side as well.
To finish it off we just added some small flower hair pins and she was ready to go.

Friday's Film: Butterfly Weave

Here's a video showing you a new twist on one of our all time favorite hairstyles, The Butterfly Wings.  (You can find the original post for Butterfly Wings here.)
It's very simple and had people stopping us all day asking how it was done.
Here's a closer look at the style.
We started with an off-centered part on the front because I like how that makes the hair look.
Depending on how long your princess's hair is, you should be able to just let the ends of your woven strands hang down.  If they are a bit short, you can secure them with bobby pins.
You can also curl the rest of the hair that is hanging down for a more elegant look.

Pull-Through Crown

This is a style that we will be using over and over again because I love the look of it and it holds all day long.
You have to start this style by first creating the Butterfly Wing style found here.  Make only three butterfly wings instead of gathering all the hair as done in the original post.  Once you have your three rows of butterfly wings you are ready to move on.
Begin on the left side of the head and grab a small section of hair just below the bottom twist and right next to the ear.  Comb it smooth and then feed it through the hoop of your Topsy Tail.  Feed the Topsy Tail over the top of the twists and then down behid the back and pull it through.
This is essentially creating a Pull-Through right over the Butterfly Wings.  Grab another small section of hair right next to your first and repeat the steps.  Do this all the way along that left side until you have come to your elastics in the middle.  (You can use as many sections of hair to create Pull-Throughs as you would like - they can be small or large, it really doesn't matter.)
Now move over to the right side and repeat the same steps.  Once you have finished that you can complete the style by pulling the middle ponytail over the elastics in one final Pull-Through.  Pull that last one just tight enough to conceal the elastics but not to flip completely through.

Hair Flowers

These beautiful Hair Flowers are courtesy of Jenn over at Girly Do's by Jenn and she is absolutely amazing.  The link to her official post for these flowers can be found here and it includes a tutorial video!
we did a simple style for church that incorporated these flowers and this is what it looked like.
First I pulled the bangs back and secured them under the hair, by the nape of the neck.  I then created 3 parallel sections on the top of the head and secured each one with an elastic.
My flowers ended up being larger than I had anticipated so I only created flowers out of my two outside sections.   I also added some twisty flower hair pins into the center of each flower.  (Don't forget to click here to see the instructional video on how to create these flowers.)
We finished off the back of her hair by straightening it and then curling her ends under.
She looked beautiful and everyone loved the flowers.  Thanks Jenn!

Mother's Day Flower

I thought this would be a great hairstyle for Mother's Day because it's a simple flower and what mother doesn't love a flower on that special day?!  :)
Begin by pulling half of the hair back and secure it in with an elastic.
Now go ahead and pull out little sections of that new ponytail and Barrel Roll them into the head and then secure them with bobby pins.  (You can see a video tutorial on how to do a Barrel Roll here.)  Keep sectioning out the rest of that ponytail and creating a ring of Barrel Rolls out of them but make sure to keep one small section in the very center of the ponytail separate.
Once all of the rolls are made you will take that center section and twist it as tightly as you can.  When you can't possibly twist it anymore, let it twist itself up into a "worm" in the center of your flower.  You can bobby pin that into place as well and then hide the bobby pin with some hair from your Barrel Rolls.  Now you've got a beautiful flower just perfect for Mother's Day!

Butterfly Wings

My princess named this the Butterfly Wings because of the pretty shape that is created on the back of the head.  This hairstyle is great because it can work for an adult, a tween, or a young girl.  You will have the best results if you start with wet hair.
Create a 2 inch part at the front of the head.  This can be placed wherever you like but we've done ours a little off-center.
Now section out a piece of hair on each side of your part that go from the part down to the ear.  Have your princess hold those two sections while you smooth the rest of the hair back.  Twist those two sections tightly.  (You want to make sure that you are having the twists roll in toward the head - i.e. the right side will be twisting counter clockwise and the left side will be twisting clockwise.)  Pull both twist to the back of the head and secure them together with a small clear elastic.  Smooth out the hair below the elastic.
Now grab another small section of hair on each side just directly below those first twists.  Twist those two sections in the same direction as you did before and have them combine in the back of the head with an elastic.
Now make sure that you combine those new twists just below your first elastic.   DO NOT add in the hair from your previous twists.  You want your new elastic to lie over the top of that hair.
Continue twisting new sections of hair from each side of the head and combining them in the back with elastics.  Once all of the hair from the scalp has been gathered, you are finished!

Wrap It Up!

Some of the prettiest styles are created by simply giving everyday styles little additions.  This is a basic ponytail at the core but we've added a few things here and there.
Start by sectioning out a thin area of hair along the bang line from ear to ear.  Using wet hair will yield the best result for you.  Now pull the rest of the hair back into a tight ponytail.
Now divide that front section into 3 areas.  We've done ours with a little larger area in the front and smaller areas on the sides but you can separate it however you like just as long as you have 3.
Twist each of the sections and pull them back to the elastic that is holding your ponytail and wrap each one around the elastic only once.  Make sure that two of your twists go to one side and the other goes to the opposite side.
Also be sure to have one twist go above the elastic and one below as you wrap on the side with the two twists.  The side with only one twist will actually wrap around 1 1/2 times so that it ends on the same side of the elastic as the other two.  (It does not matter if you wrap this one above or below the elastic.)
Now take all three of those twist and braid them into a Regular 3-Strand Braid right outside the elastic and this will secure those wraps in place.  Take that braid and wrap it around the ponytail as many times as you can and then wrap an elastic around the ponytail where the braid ends to secure it in place.
Grab a small strand of hair from the back of the remaining ponytail and wrap it around that new elastic to conceal it.  (You should only have to wrap it around a couple times.)  Use your Topsy Tail and poke it through that elastic and pull the ends of that new wrap through and back into the ponytail.  This will secure it tightly.  Now braid the remaining ponytail into which ever braid you like.  We've just done a Regular 3-Strand Braid here.  Secure it at the bottom with an elastic.  Conceal that last elastic the same way as your previous elastic with a strand of hair from the back wrapped around and pulled through with your Topsy Tail.

Friday's Film: Rosette Headband

Here is a beautiful hairstyle that only takes a few minutes to complete.  It is perfect for Picture Day at school or any other occasion.
This is also a great style for adults as well.
We call this our Rosette Headband.  If you have ever made a fabric Rosette Headband, it is exactly the same except we use bobby pins instead of glue.  .
You can really use any color of stretchy band because it will mostly be concealed.
Don't forget to be twisting your Rosettes so that they lie flat instead up perked up like a regular bun.
You can leave the hair down straight or curly.  We've used a waver and it turned out really nicely.
You can choose to do as many Rosettes as you like across the head.  This would also be pretty going around the back of the head!
We detailed our Rosettes a bit by adding some crystal hair embellishments that we found at Sally Beauty Supply.  They just twist right down into the center of the Rosette.

Here's a style that we've done previously using the same concept and we called this one the Rose Headband and you can find instructions for that here.

Holiday Hairstyles: Gingerbread Man

So you may think that every hairstyle turns out well and that we never have any complete disasters... well, this post will prove otherwise!  I just had to share this one because I had an idea in my head for this darling gingerbread man and it ended up looking like a hot mess on my poor daughter's head!  :)
These are the supplies that we used - not that you will need to remember them because this hairstyle was a FAILURE.
I'm not even going to try to type instructions because it is apparent that what I was doing did not work.  ha ha!  Just enjoy the pictures and get a good laugh in for the day.
This is supposed to show the side of the head, an arm, and a leg but I would be amazed if you could pick that out!
You can see where I attempted to create a head on top but it looks nothing like a head!
Another view of the disaster.
Maybe we'll attempt this again next year but I will have to have a seriously different approach to the whole thing because this one failed big time.  :)  Have a great day and remember *DO NOT ATTEMPT*  ha ha!

Holiday Hairstyles: Wreath

This is one of my favorite Holiday Hairstyles.  It can be formal or casual and it holds all day long.
These are the supplies you will need:  Green ribbon, a plastic yarn needle, flower hair pins, and a Christmas hair clip or two.
The basic hairstyle beneath this wreath is the Angel Halo and I have a instructional video for that here.  The only difference is that instead of ending it by the ear with a bun, I continued twisting the extra hair around the top of the head and pinned it underneath the original French twist on the side that I started.  That way I had a full circle to work with.
Thread your yarn needle with the green ribbon and insert it through your Angel Halo down at the bottom by the neck.  Begin wrapping the ribbon around your twists and follow your entire circle until you end up back at the bottom.  Tie your two ends of ribbon together to secure them and then cut off any excess.
Now grab your Christmas hair clip and place it right over the ribbon ends.  We have used two here because we didn't have one that was quite big enough.  Now take your flower hair pins and insert them around the wreath wherever you think it looks good.
It makes a really festive updo for your princess this season!

Holiday Hairstyles: Bandu Snowman

This is our Bandu Snowman hairstyle and it's made with three Bandu (or Odango) Buns.
Here are some of the supplies that you will need.  The snowman hair clips, yarn, & needle are optional.  I demonstrated how you can use the yarn in the video but I didn't personally like the outcome so our pictures are done without it.  There is a bit of yarn for the scarf, brown pipe cleaners for the arms, & a Santa hat clip.  (You can use anything you have for the hat or just leave it off.)
I'm pretty sure I called the snowman a "scarecrow" in this video and my arm was in the way for a bit of it.  Not my finest filming experience but hopefully you get the idea!  :)
It turned out pretty cute didn't it!
This shows how it looks from the side.
You can see where I divided out the three sections to start with.
It would also be fun to add some cute buttons or some type of carrot nose!
It's a pretty fast hairstyle and it holds tightly throughout the whole day.
