Friday's Film: French Fish Bone

We had a request for a tutorial on the French Fish Bone Braid.  This is a VERY simple braid but is so pretty.
This braid also created some pretty waves for the following day!
These are the Scunci "Evolution" bands that I bought and used in this video.  I absolutely love them because there's no twisting, they come out easily, and they don't rip the hair.  I got mine at Smith's grocery store but I'm sure they can be found all over.
We also use these Scunci elastics ALL THE TIME and love them because they are made out of the same stretchy material that doesn't fall out or rip the hair when removed.  We grabbed these ones at Walmart and these are our favorites.
We also love these little Goody clear elastic for the smaller piggies because they are STRONG!  We also bought these at Walmart.
Here's a picture of the finished product from today's video.
This is a previous post where we did two of these braids.  You can find that post here.
We've done this technique before with out "Something's Fishy" hairstyle and you can find that original post here.  We just secured our two section into elastics at the end without braiding any further.
Here is the original post on our regular Fish Bone Braid.  You can see that I have gotten much better at doing them as I've practiced so don't get discouraged if it's not perfect at first.  :)
There is also our "I Wish it was a 'U' Instead of a 'Y'" hairstyle and that original post is here.  This uses two Fish Bones that combine into one.

Something's Fishy

This hairstyle is all about the Fish Bone Braid.  If you're not sure how to do this you can check out our previous post on it here.
Start by dividing the hair in half and clipping one section out of the way.

Grab some hair from the top of the other half and divide it into two pieces.  Cross the left piece over the right piece and then grab a new piece of hair from the tight and cross it over the left.  Now grab some new hair from the left and cross it over to the right.
You'll notice that a French Fish Bone is different from a regular French Braid because there's no actual plating involved.  Simply gather new hair from each side and cross it over to the opposite section.  We did this midway down the head and then secured all the hair from that section into an elastic.  Now move over and unclip the other section to repeat the same process.
Now you will have two ponytails hanging down that you will make Fish Bone Braids out of.  Once they were finished, secure each one with an elastic and add some bows over the top elastics.
It's a very "fishy" hairstyle!

No Go Without A Bow

We've used several little bows in this hairstyle and you can never go wrong with a bow in your princess's hair.
Start by parting out a section of hair in the front from ear to ear.
Now part that section into two pieces making sure the part is off-centered.
Create one Pull-Through out of the smaller section and two Pull-Throughs out of the larger section.
Separate the Pull-Through on the smaller section into two pieces and create a Corkscrew and then have your princess hold it while you move to the other side.
On the larger section, create a Corkscrew out of the two Pull-Throughs.  Combine the two Corkscrews at the back of the head with an elastic.
Now you'll want to grab your little bows.  We bought some pre-made bows in the craft section at Walmart and then just glued some hair pins to the back.
Gather the combined Corkscrews along with the rest of the hair into a low pony and secure it with an elastic.

You can finish off your ponytail however you like but we've done a Fish Bone braid for 2 inches, tied it with an elastic and then left the hair straight for 2 inches and added another elastic.  We just continued that pattern until we reached the bottom of the ponytail.  When we were finished we slipped our ribbon pins into place.

I wish it was a "U" Instead of a "Y"

I am a die hard University of Utah fan and not so much a BYU fan so I'm a little sad that this is a "Y" instead of a "U". :) Begin by parting the hair into two halves and making a piggie on each side. Now Make a Fish Bone braid out of each side, making sure to only braid it half-way down the hair. Now bring the two Fish Bone Braids together into a group. Combine both sides into one Fish Bone in the middle. Braid to the bottom of the hair and secure with an elastic. This will give the "Y" look in hair, plus the Fish Bone's just look really cool. :)

Something's Fishy

Don't you just love the names of our hairstyles? The princess herself comes up with most of them. We came across this hairstyle a little by accident. I had pulled all of her hair back and was going to do a loose Fish Bone Braid at the nape of her neck. I sectioned the hair into two pieces and then began grabbing small pieces to wrap around for the plates of the braid. After plating a few we decided to wrap an elastic around each of the two pieces and leave the piggies just hanging. I think it turned out pretty cool. It's a Fish Bone into piggies. It would also be cute to make individual Fish Bone Braids out of the two piggies.

Fish Bone Braid

The Fish Bone braid is one of the most time-consuming braids but it's so pretty. Gather the hair into a ponytail and then separate it into two sections. Simply grab a small piece from one of the sections (it's best to grab it from the back of the section.) and cross it over and add to the other section. Do the same on the other side and continue until you're ready to finish. Place an elastic at the end and you're finished!
