Friday's Film: Long to Short Without a Cut

Today at school it was "Dress As Your Favorite Dr. Seuss Character" day.
My princess chose to go as Daisy-Head Mayzie and she was so excited.
In the past we've done Cindy Lou Who and you can find directions for that here.
The only problem we had with Dayzie-Head Mayzie is that her hair is short and my princess has very long hair so this is the solution we came up with:

We've done this before with our Junie B. Jones hairstyle.

We even added some fake bangs on that particular day.
Here is her new "short" hair.
This is what it looks like from the side.
We were able to hide her ribbon with the headband but it would be cute with just the ribbon as well.
Here is my little Dayzie-Head Mayzie all ready for school!

Friday's Film: Bella Curls (Flat Iron Curls)

Well, it is a big day today!  It's the release of the new Twilight movie, "Breaking Dawn - Part 1".  This is exciting for us here in this house and all of the kids went to school wearing Twilight gear that my husband and I got on our trip to Forks, WA.  (Yes!  FORKS!!!)  :)  I'm gearing up for a big party tonight with some more of my Twi-hard friends and I thought it would be fun to do a Twilight themed video for you.  These are basically Flat Iron Curls but that doesn't sound as fun as "Bella Curls"!
*Remember that it's always better to spritz the hair first with a heat protecting spray.*
You can see that the curls are nice and loose and look very natural.
We have her bangs tied under and some Long Knots on top and I will have a video for those next Friday.
Her curls lasted throughout the day and looked beautiful.
I actually did this video on Sunday so you don't get to see her cute Twilight clothes but you'll just have to pretend.  :)
Have a great day and GO TEAM EDWARD!

Flashback Friday: Pinkalicious Hair

This is our final Flashbck Friday post.  :)  It has been fun and hopefully you've enjoyed them as well!
My princess insisted that we include this post in our blog because it's one of her favorite pictures EVER!  :)
Her school had a special day where the kids got to dress up as their favorite story book character and my princess chose Pinkalicious.  (Along with several other little girls at the school!)  Because this is a hair blog I will tell you that we created two side piggies and then used the waver to give them some dimension.  Pretty simple to get a Pinkalicious hairstyle!

Flashback Friday: Dorothy Hair

For Halloween 2008 my princess decided she wanted to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.  This was perfect as far as her hair was concerned because it was the right color and the right length!

Dorothy hair is pretty simple and it most often parted with a straight division right down the middle but we decided to make it a bit more modern and offset the bangs a bit.
We created two even French Braids going all the way down the head and then we continued plating about 6 more times after all of the hair had been added in.
We placed the elastic directly under the final plates of the braids and then curled the remaining hair into one large ringlet by using hot curlers.  She wore this style 4 days in a row - a dance performance, school, trunk-or-treat and then Halloween night so I got really good at it.  :)

Rock Star

My daughter had a "Rock Star" day at school this past week and here is the hairstyle we did.
We've done this faux-hawk style before but we've tweaked it a bit with some faux hair for a fun rock star look.
Start by dividing the hair into 4 parallel sections horizontally across the head.  Gather each section up into it's own ponytail in the very center.  This will give you a row of 4 ponytails.
Grab some faux-hair clips and clip one underneath each elastic.  Pull the colored hair up through the elastic just to secure it tightly.
Now you're going to wet each ponytail down really well and Barrel Roll them.  To Barrel Roll you will comb the ponytail straight up into the air and then wrap the ends around your two index fingers.  Now roll your index fingers over each other down towards the scalp.  This will roll the hair nice and evenly for you.
Secure your Barrel Roll down into the hair with a bobby in on each side creating an "X" inside the roll.
Do this with your 3 other ponytails as well.
You will end up with a Mohawk look going down the head.   You want your colors to look more random and not perfectly placed.

Junie B. Jones

My daughter's school had "Dress up as Your Favorite Character From a Book" day and she chose Junie B. Jones.
I tried to talk her out of it because Junie has short hair and bangs - neither of which my princess has.
She insisted that she wanted to be Junie B. Jones so we simply cut her hair.  :)  (Just Kidding!)
First I pulled a small section of hair from the front left part of her bang-line and let it sweep across her forehead and over to the right ear where I secured it with bobby pins.  This gave her the "bangs" look.
Next I brushed out the rest of her hair so it was straight and placed an elastic around the bottom of it.  (Leaving about 2 inches of hair below the elastic.)
Then I grabbed a chiffon ribbon and fed it through the elastic so there was an even amount of ribbon on both sides of the band.  Now I simply pulled the ribbon up under her hair - to her neck - and wrapped it up on top of her head where I tied a bow.
This was a very fast and easy way to make her look like she had short hair.  I made an "X" with bobby pins over the ribbon right behind each ear just to make sure it would hold all day long.
Junie B. Jones also has glasses in 2nd grade so my princess popped out some lenses from some old sunglasses and had glasses for her big day.  I had to take a couple good looks at her because she did look A LOT different.  :)
This is her "Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus" impersonation!  :)

Flashback Friday: Fairy Hair

flaFor Halloween in 2007, my princess was a fairy.
We did a simple yet pretty look for her costume by pulling the top part of the hair up into to small piggies and then creating curling iron ringlets with the rest of it.  We sprayed her hair with spray glitter (which you can't really see in the picture) and added little flower clips to hide the elastics.

Hippie Hair

My princess had "Hippie Day" at school this past week and she was so excited to dress up. She looked at pictures of real Hippies online to decide what to do with her hair.  This is what she came up with and I think it looks pretty authentic.  :)
Begin by straightening all the hair.  (It would also be darling if you used a waver.)  Grab some colored pony beads and a bit of dental floss. Part the hair right down the middle a couple inches.  Grab two small strands on each side of the part - right up front - and set one aside for a minute.
Fold your piece of dental floss in half and feed the fold through one of your pony beads.  Keep the other ends of your floss tightly in your fingers so it doesn't come loose.  Now feed your strand of hair through the loop in the dental floss and then pull the floss back out through the bead.  This will automatically pull the strand of hair through the bead as well.  Wrap a small clear elastic around the strand, just under the bead, to hold it in place.  Continue adding as many beads to the strand as you like.  Do the same process with the other front strand that you set aside.
Pull out as many small pieces of hair around the head that you like.  Place beads on each of them.  We've done 5 strand of hair here but I would've done more if our morning hadn't been so rushed.  Once all of your strand have the beads on them, go ahead and curl the ends of those strands.
Grab a knitted, stretchy headband to go around the head.  Pull each of your beaded strands up through the headband and stretch it around the forehead.  Now let the beaded strands down and you're all finished.
Looking back on these pictures now, it would've been so cute to tie in some random small flowers on some of these strands.  After all, Hippies did have "flower power"!

We also have another Hippie style that we've done previously called "Feeling Groovy".
You can find instructions for that here.

Halloween Hairdos: Kitty Cat

We found these cute little clips at our local craft store and thought they would be fun to incorporate in a hairstyle.
My princess has really been wanting to try a Faux-Hawk hairstyle so we used it for these clips.
Start by dividing the hair into 4 parallel sections horizontally across the head.  Gather each section up into it's own ponytail in the very center.  This will give you a row of 4 ponytails.
Now you're going to wet them down really well and Barrel Roll them.
Now add your little clips up at the top and you have a kitty cat.
Or you can also have a devil as well.
We also have these little kitty cat ears from a while back.  They are just two simple brown pipe cleaners that we've wrapped her hair around.  We started with a small section of hair by each ear and then secured them in the middle of the head with a little barrette.

Halloween Hairdos: Minnie Mouse

So let's be honest... this isn't really a "Halloween Hairdo" but I thought I'd post it in case anyone out there is doing Minnie Mouse as a costume.  This is more a hairstyle my princess just wears all the time.  :)  It's also our official "Disneyland Do".
Grab two bun molds (or rolled socks) because they are a must have for this style.  Part the hair into two halves and pull each half up into a very high ponytail.
Now pull each ponytail through a bun mold and spread the hair out to cover the entire thing.  Tie an elastic around the mold but leave it just a bit loose.
Now tilt the mold up so that it is facing the front of the head.  This will pull some hair through the elastic a bit more but that is what you want.  Now secure the bun molds in the upright position with bobby pins.  I use about 6 pins on each mold just because we usually want a nice tight hold.
Pull the excess hair back behind each mold and twist it so that all the strand are tight.  Now cross them over one another on the back of the head and hold them together with a claw clip on each side.  Tuck any loose ends back behind the twists.  Spray it really good with hairspray and it shouldn't budge.
This is a bow that I made to mimic Minnie's actual bow and it's just stitched fabric with an alligator clip on each end of the bow to hold it in place.  It would also look cute with a headband and red flower clip.
Clip your bow right in front of your Minnie ears and she'll look perfect.
If you don't have any bow that works, you can always leave it out and just go with the Mickey ears.  It's still absolutely darling!
