Clip in bangs - Zooey Deschanel look

Hey everyone! Today is a very special day here! It's the day before Easter and everyone is painting egs and just enjoying this great sunny weather! And since I'm feeling very excited, I thought that I should post something also very spring inspired - the Zooey Deschanel inspired hairstyle!  This tutorial I've found on Bobby Glam and I must say, all of their tutorials and posts are absoloutley amazing! All very nicely put together, I love it! I also have to say that the girl in the tutorial used a clip in fringe that you can buy in their shop here.

For the full tutorial, here is the video!
It's a very classy look, prefect if you want to try something new! And while creating this hairstyle, don't panic if the moment you put you fringe in place it doesn't look good.
It just needs a little ajusment and practice. Soon I'll
post a similar tutorial also incuding bangs, but created
in a different way, so untill then, have fun creating this,
fun, edgy but still very classy hairstyle!

Happy Friday friends!

Flashback Friday: Locks of Love

My daughter has donated her hair twice to Locks of Love but these pictures are from her first time.
Her bangs had finally grown to a nice length and she wanted to do something different with her hair so we decided to chop the length off and even it all out with those bangs.
She was a little sad at first to see it all gone but as soon as we went home and styled it she was fine.
We flipped all of her ends out with a mid-sized curling iron and the bang area up and clipped it back with two bendy clips creating and "X".  She looked so cute and the length looked great on her.
She was very happy to know that her hair was going to someone that could really use it and couldn't wait until she had enough to donate it again!

Braided Bang

My princess has been dying to try this style out and I'm proud of her because she actually did the braid in front all by herself!
Our first step was to section out the bangs in the front of the head.  We clipped all the rest of the hair back and combed that section forward.
She started her braid and slowly added hair into one side of it as she plated.  She made sure to pull the braid down toward her face to create the "bangs" look.
She added all of the hair in from that section and just finished plating the rest of it into a Regular 3-Strand Braid.
From that point I took over and pulled the rest of the hair - including her braid - back into a tight ponytail.  I combed out any remaining plates from her braid so that all of the hair was straight.
I then grabbed a small section that I wrapped around the elastic and then pulled through the ponytail using a Topsy Tail.
We finished it off by braiding the entire ponytail and adding a hair clip at the bottom.  My princess said that she didn't recognize herself in the mirror because she's not used to having bangs.  :)

1-Year Anniversary & Flashback Friday: The Long Bang

It's official we have been posting hairstyles on this blog for one year now!  There are 250 posts on our site which should give you a large variety to choose from.  It's been so much fun to have this special little something to do with my princess but it's also been fun to hear from all of you readers out there.  I get several emails but I rarely get comments and I do LOVE COMMENTS.  :)
For today we have a flashback from when my princess was 5 years old.  We had been growing out her bangs for a little while and decided to put their length to use.
We pulled her hair half up and then grabbed out two small sections of her bangs.  Using a fat curling iron we curled the ends of the sections.  Pretty simple but she looked very grown up that day.  :)

Junie B. Jones

My daughter's school had "Dress up as Your Favorite Character From a Book" day and she chose Junie B. Jones.
I tried to talk her out of it because Junie has short hair and bangs - neither of which my princess has.
She insisted that she wanted to be Junie B. Jones so we simply cut her hair.  :)  (Just Kidding!)
First I pulled a small section of hair from the front left part of her bang-line and let it sweep across her forehead and over to the right ear where I secured it with bobby pins.  This gave her the "bangs" look.
Next I brushed out the rest of her hair so it was straight and placed an elastic around the bottom of it.  (Leaving about 2 inches of hair below the elastic.)
Then I grabbed a chiffon ribbon and fed it through the elastic so there was an even amount of ribbon on both sides of the band.  Now I simply pulled the ribbon up under her hair - to her neck - and wrapped it up on top of her head where I tied a bow.
This was a very fast and easy way to make her look like she had short hair.  I made an "X" with bobby pins over the ribbon right behind each ear just to make sure it would hold all day long.
Junie B. Jones also has glasses in 2nd grade so my princess popped out some lenses from some old sunglasses and had glasses for her big day.  I had to take a couple good looks at her because she did look A LOT different.  :)
This is her "Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus" impersonation!  :)

Flashback Friday: Front Poof

We were still working on growing out my princess's bangs at this point and we were looking for any creative styles.
This is a twisted front poof and basically you just twist the bang straight back to start.  Now puff the front a bit by bringing the twist down and forward.
Secure it into place by creating and "X" with bobby pins.  Straighten the rest of the hair down and you're finished.  This was one of our favorite styles while growing her bangs out.

Flashback Friday: Growing Out the Bangs

These pictures were taken just a couple days after my princess turned 4 and she decided that she was getting to old for "little girl bangs".
I remember dreading the time when we would have to grown out these bangs but it really wasn't too bad.
We just rolled them to one side and used bendy clips to secure them into place.  On this particular day we did some low Indian Braids but the rolled bangs worked with any hairstyle.
We also did this style on her first day of preschool and she looked darling!

Flashback Friday: Toddler Piggies & Curls

I've decided that I'm going to try something fun for some of my Friday posts and do a "Flashback Friday".  Many of you have younger girls with not so much hair so I'm going to share some of the ideas we've used for my princess throughout the years.  (Keep in mind that the pictures may not be fantastic but hopefully they will at least give you some ideas!)
This is my princess in April of 2007 when she was 3 1/2 years old.  She had some bangs that we always curled under.  Her hair is sectioned on top from ear to ear and then divided in half for two top-piggies.
We flipped the bottoms of her hair up and out and added some ribbon clips to her piggies.
I miss doing fun little toddler do's!

Maiden Braid

Here's a hairstyle that just sort of happened one morning.
My princess named it the "Maiden Braid" because I said to her, "Oh, you look like a fair maiden."  :)
We began with two semi-diagonal French Braids along the bang line.
The "French" part was about 5 inches long and then the rest was just finished off with a regular 3-Strand Braid.
Gather some hair from the front of the head, on the opposite side of the French Braids, and create a regular 3-Strand Braid.
Now pull all three braids to the back of the head.  Have the single braid lay right between the two braids from the opposite side and bobby pin all the braids together.
You will have little ends sticking out on each side so grab a small section of hair from each side of the head and pull it over the loose ends to hide them.  Combine the new hair in the back with an elastic.  Gather two more sections from each side of the head and combine that in the back with an elastic again.  Now gather all of the hair that is down and create a low braid.
Finish it off with a fun little clip and you're all set to go.  The cupcake clip is fun for birthdays so feel free to copy the idea if you like it!

Picture Day Do

I'm not sure why my princess had her school pictures so late this year but the time finally rolled around and this is the hairstyle we chose.  (Even though I didn't even order any because I do my own pictures- but we will get a yearbook at the end of the year and her shot will be in there.)
Begin by sectioning out the bangs from ear to ear and separate them (a little off-centered) into two pieces.  Use some product to keep the fly-aways down and pull the two sides tightly down to the back of the head - underneath the rest of the hair - where you will secure them together with an elastic.
Now gather another larger section of hair from ear to ear.
Before you secure it, you'll want to back comb the underneath a bit and then smooth out the top to give it some lift.
Now go ahead and secure it up with 6-8 bobby pins.  Make sure they're all making the "X" shape so they won't lose their grip through the day.
Now we grabbed out waver and waved the rest of her hair.  We own both the old fashion 80's Conair waver with the curved plates and the three-barrel iron waver.  The 80's one works SO MUCH BETTER!  Unfortunately their kind of hard to find now but keep your eyes peeled on Ebay or at yard sales.  :)
We finished it all off by inserting her jewel spiral accessories that just twist right into the hair.  We've made our own several times using the spiral paperclips found at scrapbooking stores but we actually purchased these ones at Walmart last week and absolutely love them.

Haircut and Church Do

My princess was in need of a serious trim to her hair.  I usually try to trim is about every 3 weeks but it had been a while and her ends were always getting tangled.
Here she is after the cut and we took a good 3 inches off just so it wouldn't be so long.  Her hair seems to grow fast and I'm sure we'll be trimming it again in no time.
We had church that morning so we decided to do something straight and pretty.  I started by parting out 2 inches of hair from ear to ear.  I then parted that section a little off-centered and created two pieces.

I set the two pieces aside and then grabbed a small section of hair from behind the left ear and braided it all.
Then I pulled the braid along the ear-to-ear part just like a headband.  Now tuck that little braid inside the hair behind the right ear and secure it with bobby pins.
Now braid each of the two front sections.  Pull the two sections over the headband braid and tuck them under the hair.  Secure them with bobby pins and softly smooth the hair over to hide the pins.  You'll end up with a nice, soft, hair-down look.

Pretty Pin-Up

So I thought this was something that everyone pretty much knew how to do and I got stopped in the store 3 times with people asking directions on it so I thought I'd do a post.
My princess just had some left over waves from her braids the day before so we wanted to let them down for the wavy look.
Now simply grab a section of hair from the front and twist is a couple of times.
Add 5 or 6 bobby pins making "X"s to hold it in place.
Now fluff the waves around to the front and spray with some hairspray.
 Very simple huh!
