American Flag

I saw this hairstyle over at Babes in Hairland and I've got to give a shout out to her because she is AMAZING!  My princess fell in love with this style and wanted to wear it on the 4th of July so this is our version it.
I started by parting the hair from ear to ear so that I had a section in front.  I divided that section into two off-centered pieces - the larger piece being on the left side.  I secured that larger piece into an elastic.
I then created a part straight down the middle of the remaining hair.  I started with the right side of the part and divided it into 4 parallel, horizontal sections and I secured each section with an elastic.  I moved over to the left side of the part and did the same thing but I made sure to offset my horizontal sections from those on the right side so that they were not exactly even.  You should now have 4 elastics on the right side of the head and 5 elastics on the left side of the head.  (The extra elastic being from the first ponytail up in front.)
Feed some red ribbon through all of the elastic on the left side and some white ribbon through all of the elastics on the right side.  Make sure that the ribbon is through the elastic right at the middle point so that two equal strand of ribbon are hanging from each ponytail.
You also want to make sure that the ribbon is the same length as the ponytail.
Now you will create a Quad Braid out of each ponytail by dividing the hair into two pieces and using the two ribbons and your 3rd and 4th pieces.  (Make sure you start braiding with the two ribbons between your center fingers so that they end up in the right place as you plate the braid.)  Secure each braid at the bottom with an elastic.
When all 9 braids are done you will cross them over to the opposite side of the head so that the reds and whites are alternating.
You can either bobby pin them in place at this time or combine each side into an elastic which is what we've done here because my princess has pretty long hair.
Add a blue hair clip over the front left elastic to finish off the look of your flag.
Very fun!

Independence Day Hair

I have a bunch of fun hairstyle for the 4th.  Click on the names of the hairstyles to be taken directly to the instructions.  :)
One of them is The Fourth of July Star,
Another is The Glowing Star
You make it glow by inserting glow sticks into it.
We actually did this one again this year because it's a fun one.
It looked a little different this year because I offset one of the parts a bit.
One of my favorites is The Firework.
Hopefully these will give you some fun ideas!

The Firework

This is a borrowed hairstyle but I've always loved it and I think it was perfect for the Pioneer Day fireworks show in Utah. You have to kind of use you imagination with this one but see how it starts in the middle of her hair and shoots out into colorful explosions just like a firework! (I know it's a stretch) :) Start by parting the hair straight down the middle and tie one half off with an elastic. Now divide the other half into three equal triangles. Tie each little section off with an elastic to hold it out of the way. Now take the elastic out of one triangle section and twist it into an Odango Bun. (Odango Buns are made by twisting the whole strand of hair and then twisting the hair around itself and making a bun.) Secure the bun with an elastic. Now do this with the other two sections and repeat the process on the other half of the head. (Tip: It looks best if you can make the parts on the second half shoot straight off from the parts on the first side.) Finish it all off by twisting some pipe cleaners around each bun. The sparkly pipe cleaners work the best. She had a ball at the festivities and everyone kept commenting on her hair.

Uneven 5 Strand Braid

Here's a fun little twist on a favorite. You can pull the hair up any way you like - I've done piggies here. Now separate the hair into 5 sections, one being large and the other four being small. Now begin braiding. (See "5 Strand Braid" for more details.) It gives the braid a really cool pattern. We were at Wheeler Farm for Pioneer Day and everyone was commenting on her hair.

Glowing Star

We decided to give the star another try for church since it's Independence Day. Personally, I like this star a bit better. Start just like the last one, with three Pull-Throughs at the top of the head. I separated the top and left side ponytails into two separate braids and the right ponytail was only in one braid. Make sure that you pull one of the left braids across and add it into the ponytail on the right before you begin braiding the right one. Once you've got all your braids, get them into the star formation and attach them to the existing ponytails. We finished off the rest of the hair with regular braids. Later that night we prepared to go to a fireworks show and we threaded some glow sticks through her braids. They glowed through the whole fireworks show and she looked great!

Fourth of July Star

My princess wanted to wear her red, white, and blue for her last day of school this week so we decided to make her hair festive as well. I've seen "Star" hairstyles out there and this was our version of one of my favorites. You do 3 Pull-Throughs at the top of the head. Divide the rest of the hair into two sections and pull them into ponytails. Divide the hair from the side Pull-Throughs into two sections each. The middle Pull-Through will be divided into 4 sections. Take the left half of the sections and twist each one. Pull them over to the bottom right ponytail and combine them with an elastic. Take the right half of the sections and twist each one. Weave them through the left sections as you pull them over to the bottom left ponytail and combine them with an elastic. We braided the ponytails into Quad Braids and attached some festive bows. This hairstyle got many comments from people at school and it held together really well too.
